How to Prepare for a Session – Undergraduate

  • Be prepared to be actively involved, asking and answering questions.
  • Take notes
  • Be ready to revise your work

If you are asking for help on the day an assignment is due, we'll cover "later order" concerns:

  • Format
  • Source citation and documentation
  • Proofreading
  • Transitions
  • Introduction and/or conclusion

The best preparation is to consider what you want to get out of your time at the ENMU Writing Center. Since we will have limited time together (undergraduate sessions are 30 minutes long), what are your priorities? Read over your draft or your assignment. What questions do you have?

Proofread your writing so your ENMU Writing Center tutor knows that any errors in your work are those that you might need to talk about in the session.

Remember that the ENMU Writing Center tutor you work with won't be able to look at every sentence of your writing. If your writing assignment is more than about four pages, please identify the pages that you want to focus on in your session.

You may want to consult your assignment during the session, so be sure to bring it with you. If you are writing about a text, you should bring that as well.

If your professor has marked some needed corrections on your writing, try to make the corrections before you come to the session. That will give you and your ENMU Writing Center tutor a good sense of what you might need to talk about further.

Plan to take notes while you talk about your work. You may have some great ideas during that conversation, and you don't want to forget what you talked about.

Remember that your ENMU Writing Center appointment is just for you; you must be present at the session in order to receive help with your writing!

How to Prepare for a Session – Graduate

The best preparation is to consider what you want to get out of your time working with the ENMU Writing Center. You may have a long document, such as a chapter, that we will not be able to go over line by line.

Since we will have limited time together (graduate sessions are 45 minutes long), what are your priorities? Read over your document thoughtfully. What questions do you have?

Proofread your writing so the ENMU Writing Center tutor knows that any errors that are left are those that you might need to talk about in the session.

If your project is more than four or five pages, please identify the pages you want to focus on in this session. You can mark these sections in the margins, for example.
