Title: Painting with a Swirl

Description: Our very own ASAB Graphic Designer Van Thang will be creating beautiful art using only four colors, simple brushes, and a small 5" X 7" canvas all from Walmart for just under $8. This event will be live on ZOOM so that you can follow along on your very own canvas. All guests will be able to interact with the artist as he paints.

Title: Cooking Made Easy with Dr. Mary Ayala

Date: 1-27-2021

Dish Lesson: Italian Wedding Soup and Cheesy Bread

Time: 7 pm

Description: Join us as Dr. Mary Ayala, our very own Dean from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will demonstrate how to prep and make a delicious Italian meal made with simple ingredients from your local grocery store. This simple meal will be able to serve up to 4 to 6 guests at your home and the cost just under $20. Join us!

Supplies Needed: [1 bag] (2-3 stalks) of Celery, [1 bag of] (15-20) baby carrots, 1 bag of Spinach (small frozen bag works well), [1 head] 3 cloves of Garlic, 1 Onion, 1 lb. Ground Beef, Italian seasoning, [1 small bag of] (¾ cup) white Rice, 4 Eggs, 1 to 2 slices [Loaf] white bread, 2-cup bag Italian shredded cheese blend, 2 cans of Chicken broth 32 oz or 2 box, 1 Canned pizza dough, [1] ¼ to ½ cup Seasoned Italian Bread crumbs (you can use bread crumbs OR sliced bread or combine them, so you don't have to buy both if you have one on hand already), a little bit of milk, oil, salt and pepper. [Optional: take-out seasoning packets – crushed red pepper and parmesan.]

If you want them to know what utensils they will need:

2 baking sheets, lined with parchment or aluminum foil (for easier clean-up)

1 small pot with tight lid to make rice

1 large pot to make soup

Wooden spoon (for cooking) and ladle (for serving)

2 small bowls for mixing/soaking ingredients

Cutting board and knife

Cooling rack or other place to put items that come out of the oven

Cooking timer

Measuring cup and measuring spoons

Dish Lesson: College Country Cooking (Chicken Fried Steak Dinner and Optional Berry Crumble dessert)

Time: 7 pm

Description: Join us as Enrollment Service director Cody Spitz as he will demonstrate how to prep and make a delicious Chicken Fried Steak Dinner and optional super easy berry crumble dessert.  This meal can be made on a budget with simple ingredients from your local grocery store serving up to 4 guests at your home and the cost just under $16.  Optional dessert ingredients are around $5. 1 package of tenderized round steak four count (*Vegetarian option can be substituted with four portabella mushrooms caps*)

1 packet brown gravy mix - usually around an ounce (*Vegetarian option leaves this one out)

1 pint of vegetable oil

½ gallon of milk (*Vegetarian option can be substituted with 32 ounce box of vegetable stock)

2-3 cups of flour (a small 2-pound bag will give you plenty)

1 package of 12-ounce bag frozen vegetable of choice (corn, green beans, peas – your preference)

½ pound of potatoes

Salt

Pepper

Optional

1 can pie filling

1 box cake mix

1 stick butter

You can be creative but a few flavor combinations are:

Blueberry pie filling with lemon cake mix

Apple pie filing with spice cake mix

Cherry pie filing with chocolate cake mix

Strawberry pie filling with red velvet cake mix

Mixed berry pie filling with white cake

 

Cooking Supplies

1 12-inch skillet

2 medium sized sauce pans

1 cutting board

1 knife

1 fork or tongs

1 whisk (if you do not have a whisk you can use a fork)

1 vegetable peeler (if you do not have a peeler, you can use your knife)

Paper towels or wire rack

2 containers (can be wide mouth bowls or some type of deep dish, used for breading)

1 large bowl (our thank you for coming bowl)

 

Optional

1 medium sized (12 ounce) baking dish

Title: Slam Poet Ashlee Haze (Celebrating Women's History Month)

Date: 3-24-2021

Time: 7 pm

Description: Ashlee Haze is a poet and spoken word artist from Atlanta by way of Chicago. Earning the nickname "Big 30" because of her consistency in getting a perfect score, she is one of the most accomplished poets in the sport of poetry slam. She has been a part of the Atlanta poetry circuit for over a decade and has been writing for over 15 years. Ashlee Haze is a 3- time Queen of the South Poetry Slam champion, 2-time Women of the World Poetry Slam finalist and 2- time National Poetry Slam semi-finalist. She recently appeared on NPR's Tiny Desk series alongside Blood Orange. After her poem "For Colored Girls Who Don't Need Katy Perry when Missy Elliott is Enough" went viral, Missy Elliott was so moved she showed up at the poet's house.

Title: Super Power Leadership with Speaker and Mentalist Christopher Carter

Description: Student Body Language is more than just a lecture. Chris not only demonstrates his ability to "read minds," but teaches students how to precisely identify and analyze non-verbal cues. But that's just the start! Through interactive demonstrations, Chris shows the students how they can use their newfound knowledge of body language to improve their social lives, relationships with their roommates, academic success, and even how to nail their first job interview after graduation!

Supplies Needed:

Burgers

1 package of hamburger buns (or your favorite bun/bread of choice) (*Vegetarian option use romaine lettuce leaves for wraps*)

Mayo or butter to toast the buns

1 package of 80/20 ground beef (or ground meat of your choice) (*Vegetarian option can be substituted with four portabella mushrooms caps*)

1 bell pepper (I like yellow, red or orange because they are a bit sweeter than green bell peppers; you can also use jalapeno peppers or crushed red pepper flakes for some heat if you'd rather)

½-1 cup parmesan cheese

½-1 cup of bread crumbs (I like Italian seasoned b/c the spices are in the crumbs)

½-1 cup of grated mozzarella cheese

 Tomato onion jam

1 yellow onion

1-2 Roma tomatoes

1-2 tbsp chicken stock concentrate

Vegetable oil

Salt and pepper

 Oven fries

1-2 decent-sized potatoes of your choice (depending on how many fries you want!)

Vegetable oil

Salt and pepper

½-1 cup Parmesan cheese

 Cooking Supplies:

1 9x13 baking pan for oven fries

2 large bowls (1 for burger mix and 1 for oven fries)

1 spatula for flipping burgers

1 vegetable peeler (if you don't like potato skin on your fries)

Paper towels
